the BYO (Bring your own) campaign designed to encourage volunteers to
help decrease the ecological footprint of the Cleanup effort. Volunteers

6th Annual Underwater Clean Up Event will be in conjunction
with the Coastal Clean Up Day on September 17th from 8am-noon

DAILY
WHALE WATCHING CRUISES
The
Blue Whales are here! The Blue Whale season runs May -
October. Remember that whale watching is year round at Dana Wharf as we
see the Gray Whale migration November - April! The Blue Whales are the
largest mammal on Earth and can grow to over 100 feet long! Whaling in
the 1900's caused a severe decline in the blue whale population along the
Pacific coast of the United States. Once hunting was banned, the blue
whale population has slowly started to recover. Before whaling was
commercialized, blue whale numbers along the Pacific were estimated to be
around 200,000. Today, the blue whale population around the world is
estimated to be around 12,000. Approximately 2,000 blue whales call the
Pacific coast their home. The blue whale is listed as endangered by the
IUCN Red List. These gentle giants are truly an amazing sight to see! We
saw 216 Blue Whales last season and each year the number of sightings
increases

Tail of the
Whale – Econ License Plate Challenge
There is a reason why Dana
Point Harbor is known as the WHALE CAPITAL OF THE WEST! The Dana Point
Harbor Association, The OC Dana Point Harbor and City of Dana Point are all
proud to be sponsors of the Stewards of the Coast Campaign. The Stewards
of the Coast are teaming up to provide the underwriting of discount
pricing for 1,000 of the New Whale Tail Eco plates for California
vehicles. The California Coastal Commission and the California DMV
introduced the New
Whale Tail Eco–plate today in our own Dana Point Harbor
and the Stewards are underwriting a WHALE OF A DEAL for the first
1,000 who sign up for this new and iconic plate. The first 1,000
Californians who sign up on www.ecoplates.com
for the new specialty license plate will receive the WHALE OF A DEAL! The
first 1,000 people to order the new Eco–plate will receive 50 percent off
($25 instead of $50) and $25 off a personalized eco plate ($73 instead of
$98) plus two tickets to a California aquarium. On top of that, our own
Mayor Scott Schoeffel has delivered a challenge to all other California
mayors to join him in a friendly competition - "The Whale Tail Cities
Challenge" to see which participating city claims
the most Whale Tail Eco-plate sales as a percentage of population before
Coastal Clean Up Day on September 17th. The winning city will
receive a gift basket of locally produced foods and beverages from each
of the participating cities to be shared at a city event or council
meeting and a drawing will be held in the winning city for a plate
participant to win a replica gift basket.
The deal is only valid for the FIRST 1,000 plates, so don't delay! Go to www.ecoplates.com and order your
beautiful Whale Tail License plate today! Funds from the plate go to the
Whale Tail Eco–plate Fund. This fund grants money to local organizations
involved in Coastal preservation, habitat restoration, marine education
and recreation, coastal access pathways, wildlife protection, open space
preservation and pollution prevention. Our own Dana Point Harbor Ocean
Institute is a recipient of these grants. The plate sales also fund the
annual California Coastal Cleanup Day coming up on Saturday September 17th.
This year, the Stewards of the Coast will also provide Coastal Cleanup
Day participants with the chance to win getaways to beautiful California
destinations or a $1,000 gift certificate to Whole Foods Market. For more
information go to www.ecoplates.com
and http://www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/ccd/ccd.html.
